How much can I load?

How much can I load?

How much can I load in a shelf? How much weight can a double floor hold? We get a lot of questions regarding weight specifications and load securing for our products. To find out what applies, we have compiled this page.

A FULLY LOADED CARRIER

Transportbil

The carrier’s main purpose is loading, but with a fully loaded car comes risks. Therefore, it is important to load as safely as possible and use common sense. In the event of a collision, enormous forces comes into play and it is nearly impossible to secure the load so that it withstands a collision with a solid object. Fortunately, such collisions rarely occur. This is also the reason why the requirements for load securing rather focus on preventing load shifting during, for example, an evasive maneuver or heavy braking.

HOW IS LOAD SECURING TESTED?

In Euro NCAP's crash tests, the cars don’t carry any cargo and the focus is on the car's safety system and protection for passengers and other road users. Thus, their safety rating does not take load securing into account. For van racking and accessories, the test standard NS286 is used instead, which means that van racking loaded with 250 kg/m³ collide with a fixed barrier at 50 km/h. In comparison, a medium-sized carrier is loaded with an average of approx. 160 kg.

HOW WEIGHT IS SPECIFIED

The weights stated as load capacity in the industry is not the same as the ones used in crash tests. We do not want to give a false sense of security and therefore we have decided not to label our products with weight specifications. On the other hand, it should be remembered that even if the load capacity according to the test standard NS286 may sound low, it is much safer to load in approved van racking than to perform the load securing yourself or leave the load loose. This applies regardless of which van racking brand you choose as the requirements are significantly tougher than for example eye hooks or car partitions.

WEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS FOR OUR PRODUCTS

Below you will find weight specifications for our products. These are stated as load capacity and where applicable also according to the test standards NS286 and City Crash Test.

The most important thing for these specifications to correspond to reality is that the products are assembled according to instructions and that the correct number of angle brackets is used. This is to ensure that the van racking has the right bearing capacity.

VAN RACKING

Hyllsystem

Our shelves have different load capacities (see below) and can therefore be adapted to your specific needs. It is rare for a shelf to break due to weight load, but in combination with a hit or something tipping over on the shelf, its edge can be deformed. Which causes the shelf to lose its load capacity.

Load capacity

Up to 70 cm: 50 kg
70-126 cm: 40 kg
126-140 cm: 30 kg
Over 140 cm: 25 kg

According to City Crash Test (30 km/h):
 30 kg/shelf
According to NS286: Read more here

MODULAR CRATE

Modulback
A modular crate has a maximum load of 7 kg.

DRAWERS

Lådor

By weighing several customers' drawers, we have concluded that a drawer typically is loaded with 5-8 kg. Even heavy loaded drawers rarely weight over 25 kg.

Maximum load: 60 kg/drawer
According to City Crash Test (30 km / h):
20 kg/drawer
According to NS286: Depends on the size of the drawer - read more here

DOUBLE FLOOR

Dubbelgolv

= MAXIMUM LOAD (EVENLY DISTRIBUTED)    = EVENLY DISTRIBUTED OVER 50x50 cm    = POINT LOAD

ON TOP OF THE DOUBLE FLOOR

If you want to load on top of the double floor, we recommend that you supplement with van racking to block and brace the cargo. Alternatively, make sure to anchor the load in the car's body.

Maximum load (evenly distributed): 350 kg
Point load: 50 kg
Evenly distributed over 50x50 cm: 100 kg

DRAWERS FOR DOUBLE FLOOR

Dubbelgolvslådor

Maximum load: 65 kg
According to NS286: 22 kg and up - read more here

CARGO SLIDES

Lastsläde

= MAXIMUM LOAD (EVENLY DISTRIBUTED)    = EVENLY DISTRIBUTED OVER 50x50 cm    = POINT LOAD

Cargo slides cannot be tested according to NS286 due to the load not being blocked and braced. However, all our cargo slides are carefully checked in destructive tests, both in terms of load and locking performance.

Maximum load (evenly distributed): 350 kg*
Point load: 50 kg
Evenly distributed over 50x50 cm: 100 kg

*Custom-made cargo slides wider than 120 cm and/or longer than 160 cm have a maximum load of 250 kg.

ROOF RACKS/ROOF BARS

Takräcken

Our roof racks are tested according to the City Crash Test, which is the most common test for roof racks and roof boxes.

Maximum load: 50 kg per roof rack/roof bar - keep in mind that the load limit for the car top may be lower.
